Of the three things the “bad guy” might want – your body, your life or your valuables – valuables are the one of the three I am not prepared to advise you to risk your life over. In my opinion, fighting back to protect your body and life is a choiceless choice but a personal choice. However, risking your life over valuables that you can replace is not a risk I suggest you take.
I recall a story of one teenage girl we taught in our program who told me she had an expensive Coach purse. A criminal demanded she give it to him or he would harm her. She told me she had given up the bag. I said, great! What is the problem?
She said when she got home; she shared the story with her mother. Her mother got upset and said, “You gave him the purse? Do you know how much I paid for that?”
Without hesitation, I said, “You did the right thing!”
Why was I so strong with my reaction? Because if I did not praise this young woman for making the right choice to put her own life above a handbag, she might have made the wrong choice next time.
