Over the years, to protect victims of domestic violence and stalking, I have encouraged them to document and record each occurrence in as much detail as possible, including any text, images, or screenshots. This recording of events, whether one feels they are small, large, or insignificant, can help provide a trail of evidence for prospective legal action in the future. Sadly, too many victims have told me of their experiences only from memory, often forgetting or blocking out critical details that could help them seek legal justice.
In addition, sharing a comprehensive timeline makes it easier for the police or support services to treat your story seriously and more promptly. It also assists the victim in taking action sooner, seeing the pattern of abuse and not as single incidents which may create doubt about their victimization.
