Chris has a unique training style, detailed, practical, and delivered with a hilarious sense of humour that makes the days fly by. Being certified by SAFE has made me feel safe, strong, and smart when defending myself, and I'm honoured to teach this program to school children abroad. I'm so grateful for the knowledge and confidence SAFE has given me.

Great experience. Chris is a wealth of knowledge. I was challenged to think about situations I had never considered before, and I learned something new about people and about myself. Thank you, Chris.

Leanne Erickson Huvenaars

SAFE Certified Instructor

I've been in the self-defence industry for years and this program has had the biggest impact on my professional outlook. Before, I focused mostly on techniques. SAFE shifted my attention to conflict resolution, de-escalation, awareness, and mental preparedness, the real core of self-defence. It's changed how I teach and how I handle high-stress situations, both on the mat and in everyday life.

SAFE opened my eyes to how overwhelming too many techniques can be, not just for beginners but for instructors too. Learning about Hick's Law and option overload really resonated. The material on mindset, trauma, and why people come to learn self-defence changed how I see my students. The pre-confrontation content alone was worth the investment. I'm very appreciative of Chris sharing his knowledge to help us save lives.

The instructor training at SAFE is more than an enrichment, it's a fundamental new perspective on self-defence. In Krav Maga and combatives, violence prevention often plays too small a role. SAFE finally fills that gap. Chris helps you put the person, their experiences, and their needs at the centre of training, instead of just imposing a concept on everyone. For me as a trainer, it was a benefit in every way.

Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Decide

Do I need prior self-defence or martial arts experience?

No. SAFE is designed to work for both beginners and experienced instructors. If you are new to self-defence, the material gives you a solid, structured foundation to build on. If you already have experience, you will find depth, nuance, and a framework that likely fills gaps other programs left behind. What matters most is that you genuinely want to help regular people stay safer.

Is this for experienced instructors only, or can beginners certify?

Both are welcome. The program is structured so beginners are not overwhelmed, while experienced instructors still find plenty to challenge and refine their thinking. Some of our certified instructors are building SAFE into a full-time teaching business. Others are adding it to an existing program or simply refining their current approach. Whatever your starting point, there is a path that fits.

I already have a certification — why would I add SAFE?

Many instructors who come to SAFE already have strong credentials. The difference is focus. Most certifications are designed to test an instructor's own abilities and performance — how well they execute technique within a system built for dedicated, long-term students. SAFE is built around something different: the one-time learner. The person who takes one class or one course in their lifetime and needs to walk away with something they can actually use.

Many certified instructors tell us they sought out SAFE because they recognized us as experts in the pre-physical phases — violence prevention, awareness, and conflict resolution for the challenges regular people face in their daily lives. They bring their own physical teaching strengths and find SAFE sharpens everything that comes before. Our physical teachings remain an important and popular part of the program — SAFE simply ensures the full picture is covered.

How long does the certification take to complete?

It varies — and that is intentional. Some participants complete the program in a few weeks. Others take several months. Many tell us that the self-paced format is one of the things they appreciate most, because it fits around their existing schedule and commitments. Some are building SAFE into a full-time teaching business. Others are adding it to an existing program or refining their current approach. There is no deadline and no pressure — you move through the material in the way that works best for you.

Is it fully online or do I need to travel?

Since COVID, approximately 95% of participants choose the fully online format and find it works extremely well. A hybrid option and a full in-person immersion are also available for those who want hands-on depth. Those options involve additional costs and logistics which can be discussed directly with Chris.

What happens after I certify — do I get ongoing support?

Yes. Full Certification includes direct access to Chris for questions, discussion, and professional insight. You also receive lifetime updates as the program evolves, plus access to the SAFE Online Self-Defence Library which continues to grow over time. You are not left on your own after you certify.

Is the certification internationally recognised?

SAFE Certified Instructors are currently teaching in 12+ countries. While SAFE is not affiliated with a government body or sports federation, it is a well-established program with over 30 years of real-world application. For most instructors teaching community, corporate, or private workshops, SAFE certification carries strong credibility with the audiences that matter most.

How quickly can I recoup the cost?

Most instructors recover their full investment after just one or two seminars. If you charge even a modest workshop fee and teach a small group, the certification pays for itself quickly. The non-certification option at CAD $799 is also available if you want to experience the material first before committing fully.

What is the difference between Full Certification and the SAFE VIP option?

The SAFE VIP certification focuses specifically on Violence Identification and Prevention — the awareness and prevention layer of the SAFE framework. It is ideal if you want to start with the foundation before expanding further. Full Certification covers the complete Prevention → Conflict → Physical framework and includes all bonuses, live Zoom coaching, and ongoing support.

Can I upgrade from the non-certification option later?

Yes. If you start with the non-certification option at CAD $799 and later decide you want full certification, you simply pay the difference. Nothing you have already paid is lost.

Who teaches the program?

The program is taught directly by Chris Roberts, Founder of SAFE International. Chris has over 30 years of experience in violence prevention and self-defence, has taught 200,000+ people across 12+ countries, and has been certifying professionals internationally for 15+ years. You are not handed off to an assistant or automated system — Chris is personally involved throughout.

How is SAFE different from other certifications I have seen?

Most programs teach fighting. SAFE teaches self-defence for real people in real situations. The focus is on prevention first, conflict resolution second, and physical skills only when necessary — and always taught in a way regular people can actually remember under stress. There are no belts, no sport focus, and no technique overload. Just a clear, practical framework built around how people actually think and act when fear hits.
